Solar Roof Shingles

Solar Roof Shingles

Midland-based Dow Chemical is announcing the latest in energy independence, the Powerhouse Solar Shingle. Roofers install the solar shingles just like regular asphalt shingles. They are due to be available in 2010 and readily available in 2011.

Dow Chemical says, it’s the first affordable, neighborhood-friendly solar shingle. With it, the company says, it’ll create jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Dow CEO Andrew Liveris says, “Michigan does have manufacturing capability, and Michigan, especially Dow, has research capability. So I’m very keen to work with Lansing and for that matter, Washington, to keep bringing jobs here.”

No, they do not produce power at night, they are solar not lunar. Anyway, I am more worried about how many I would need to produce enough power for my house and the costs. I have been looking at the 360 degree wind turbines, but they are still too obtrusive for me, even away from the house, but those supply power at night.

We are weeks away from starting on our new home on Grand Lake (about 2 hours north of Midland). We would like to participate in any testing program you might offer for your new product. Our home will be approximately 2500 sq. ft., situated on the southern shore of the lake. I would entertain a partial roof section, or a gable using your product. I’ve been turned off to the sections I’ve seen on other roofs here, and in Japan. I’m interested in a panel array that blends int o the architecture of the home. I own a small appliance store here in Alpena, and am convinced I’ve got to lead the way in going “green”. Let me know what you might have available. I can email my home plans if you have any prototypes that might suit our project.
